This is the village´s patron saint and first American saint. She is venerated with civic ceremonies, attended by numerous political and religious figures of the province, a mass in her honor and “misachicos” (small religious processions by villagers) joined by “sikuri” bands. During the pilgrimage, which takes place after the mass, a group of “samilantes,” dressed in “ñandú” (rhea) feathers, make way for the Saint’s image. This is a clear example of the syncretism between Catholic faith and native customs which still live on.
On the eve of the event, a fund-raising bazaar including recreational games is held at the local school. This is one of the most important religious celebrations of Purmamarca.
