On Belgrano street, on the left of the church, there stands one of the most important and ancient symbols of the province: the historic mesquite tree.
It is a 13-meter black mesquite tree with a crown of about 30 meters. According to studies carried out by the National Institute for Agricultural Technology (INTA), the specimen has an estimated age of 620 years.
According to legend, it was at the foot of this tree that in the year 1594, Viltipoco, the local chief, was captured in an ambush by Francisco de Argañaraz y Murguía (governor of Jujuy at that time) while taking a nap in its shade. Besides, at the beginning of the 19th century, the tree witnessed the campaign led by Manuel Belgrano and the Army of the North under his command.
